Supporting young adults in care
About the course
This course equips health and social care professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support young adults in care, focusing on their transition to independence, mental health, resilience-building, and safeguarding. Participants will explore the challenges care leavers face, including trauma, instability, social isolation, and barriers to education or employment, and learn strategies to provide effective, person-centred support.
What will you learn
Understanding the Needs of Young Adults in Care
- Recognise the challenges young adults in care face, including mental health risks and instability.
- Explore the transition process from child to adult care and strategies for independent living.
- Address cultural, identity, and disability-related needs to promote inclusivity.
Providing Emotional and Practical Support
- Apply person-centred care to build resilience and autonomy.
- Promote life skills development, including budgeting, employment preparation, and education access.
- Encourage social inclusion by connecting young adults with community networks.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Identify common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
- Implement trauma-informed care to build trust and emotional stability.
- Encourage healthy coping mechanisms, including exercise, creativity, and peer support.
Legal, Ethical, and Safeguarding Responsibilities
- Understand key legislation, including the Children and Social Work Act 2017.
- Uphold data protection, confidentiality, and human rights.
- Develop safeguarding strategies to prevent exploitation, abuse, and homelessness.
