This course provides health and social care professionals with essential knowledge on endocrine disorders, including diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and rare hormonal conditions. It explores the structure and function of the endocrine system, common disorders encountered in care settings, and the carer’s role in managing symptoms, medications, and lifestyle adjustments. Learners will develop skills in early detection, emergency response, and holistic support for individuals living with endocrine imbalances.

- Identify the key glands and hormones of the endocrine system.
- Recognise common endocrine disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disease, and adrenal conditions.
- Understand the causes, symptoms, and impacts of hormonal imbalances.
Managing Diabetes in Care Environments
- Differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and their care requirements.
- Recognise symptoms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia and respond appropriately.
- Administer insulin safely and monitor blood glucose levels.
- Support diabetic patients through diet, physical activity, and lifestyle modifications.
Caring for Patients with Thyroid Disorders
- Understand hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, their symptoms, and management.
- Support patients in medication adherence and lifestyle adjustments.
- Identify psychological effects of thyroid conditions and provide emotional support.
- Recognise emergency conditions such as thyroid storm and myxoedema.
Supporting Individuals with Rare Endocrine Disorders
- Identify conditions such as Addison’s disease, Cushing’s syndrome, and pituitary disorders.
- Understand the role of hormone replacement therapy and its management.
- Address emotional and psychological challenges linked to rare endocrine disorders.
